Remembering Alfred Edward Swan
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Alfred Edward Swan (the text on the image labelling the soldier as Leonard Edward Swan is incorrect). Swan was born November 1, 1895 in Sutton, Surrey, England. He lived and farmed in Cookstown, Ontario before enlisting in the 177th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (Service Number: 853699) on October 21, 1916. Swan died on May 29, 1918 at age 22 of pneumonia. He was serving with the 4th Battalion when he died at the Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich, England, on May 29, 1918. Remembering Cecil Taggart
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Cecil Taggart, born June 20, 1899 and died May 17, 1941 at age 42. Taggart was only sixteen years old when he enlisted, so he changed his year of birth to 1897. He served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, service number B81562. Taggart had four children wuth his wife, Ruby Thayer.He is interred in the Veteran's section of Toronto's Prospect Cemetery.
Remembering Charles Frederick Gibson
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Charles Frederick Gibson, born 1920 and died in 2013. The Gibson family owned a farm on the 5th Line near Thornton. The Gibson family moved around the area, also living on the 6th Line at the 10th Sideroad and on the 6th Line near the 20th Sideroad. Gibson went to Killyleagh school and later to Barrie Business College. He worked at Camp Borden for one year. He was awarded the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and the 1939-1945 medal. By the time that Gibson was discharged from service in 1945 he had been promoted to the rank of Leading Air Craftsman., 2015-AlconaGlen_006
Remembering Harold Ward Bassingthwaite
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Harold Ward Bassingthwiate, born June 1, 1895 in Richmond Hill and died September 28, 1917 of shell gas wounds. His service number was 142185.
Remembering Louis Corm
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Louis Corm, born March 10, 1887. Regimental number 889979, 189th Battalion.
Remembering Milton Emerson Galloway
In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Milton Emerson Galloway, born May 25, 1918. He enlisted in the Canadian Armoured Corps, service number A103822, on August 4, 1942. He married Doris Jinks and they had one son, Larry. Galloway passed away on January 5, 2004 at 85 years of age. He had been stationed at Camp Suffield in Alberta and worked for the Defence Research Establishment Suffield.

Remembering Private Eston Henry Lowrie

Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Private Eston Henry Lowrie, born August 30, 1889 in Manitoba. He worked as a printer in Prince Albert and later moved to Cookstown. He was a member of the 2nd Canadian Machine Gun Brigade during World War I. Service number 643482. Lowrie was a victim of a gas attack in September 1918, and later died on December 10, 1918 from bronchial pneumonia at age 29. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery in France. [Note: Additional information not included in original research project follows.] Lowrie's next of kin was his father, also Henry Lowrie of Cookstown. He attested with the 157th Simcoe Foresters - one of the Simcoe Battalions. It was later broken up to provide reinforcements to other battalions. Lowrie died iserving with the 2nd Motor Machine Gun Company, part of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Private Lowrie's date of death (December 10, 1918) is after the end of World War I (November 11, 1918). Etaples was the site of more than ten military hospitals. Etaples Cemetery is one the largest WWI cemeteries with over 10 000 burials.
Remembering Ronald Robert Mcfadden

This project honours Ronald Robert McFadden, born August 23, 1913 and died October 10, 1990. McFadden was a tank driver with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps (RCAC) during WWII and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service medal & Clasp, the Defence Medal and 4 stars including the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France & Germany Star. McFadden attended school in St. Paul's, and had two sisters and one brother named Wanda, Diana and Gordon. He married Elsie Velma Bobbette and together they had three children. Service number BP013861.
