In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Alfred Edward Swan (the text on the image labelling the soldier as Leonard Edward Swan is incorrect). Swan was born November 1, 1895 in Sutton, Surrey, England. He lived and farmed in Cookstown, Ontario before enlisting in the 177th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (Service Number: 853699) on October 21, 1916. Swan died on May 29, 1918 at age 22 of pneumonia. He was serving with the 4th Battalion when he died at the Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich, England, on May 29, 1918. He is interred at Sutton and Cheam Cemetery, Surrey, England. From Innisfil Veterans: Their Lives and Memories, page 48.
