In the fall of 2015 the Grade 8 class at Alcona Glen Public school embarked on an inquiry project designed to further the class’s investigative skills while honouring the lives and memories of local Veterans. Within Walking distance of Alcona Glen there are 25 streets named for WWI & II Veterans. Students researched the lives of the veterans and summarized them, attaching them to a map of the community. This project honours Charles Frederick Gibson, born 1920 and died in 2013. The Gibson family owned a farm on the 5th Line near Thornton. The Gibson family moved around the area, also living on the 6th Line at the 10th Sideroad and on the 6th Line near the 20th Sideroad. Gibson went to Killyleagh school and later to Barrie Business College. He worked at Camp Borden for one year. He was awarded the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and the 1939-1945 medal. By the time that Gibson was discharged from service in 1945 he had been promoted to the rank of Leading Air Craftsman.
