Dawson's Drug Store
-
Dawson's Drug Store at the north west corner of intersection of Highways 27 and 89 in Cookstown with three small boys posing in the doorway. The boys are Gordon Dawson, Douglas Dawson and Donald Monkman, about 1927. Mr. Blackmore used to direct traffic at this intersection. Both Gordon and Douglas Dawson served as pilots in the Royal Canadian Air Force (115 Squadron) in World War II. Gordon and Douglas were brothers, the sons of Thomas James Dawson and Isobel Caroline Dawson. Gordon was also the husband of Gwendoline Doris Dawson. He died on 15 November 1944 at age 22 and is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany. Douglas Dawson died on 17 September 1944 at age 19 and is buried in Strijen Protestant Cemetery in the Netherlands. Both Dawson brothers are listed in the Canadian Virtual War Memorial. With field crops, the lumber business, stone house office and storage sheds prominently displayed. Born in England, Denis came to Canada at age 4 and later moved to Innisfil where he attended Big Bay Point School. Denis set up a custom lumber business which operated until 1970. The sign out front read Denis Sheard Ltd., Quality Lumber, Loans arranged. Paint, brushes, drafting supplies and lumber were only a part of the merchandise. The business operated until 1970., IHS3862

Dock at Robinson House Hotel
-
Photo of the Robinson House, a hotel on Big Bay Point. The hotel first came into being when Isaac Robinson, a farmer on Big Bay Point, began taking summer boarders into his farmhouse. This proved profitable enough to convert the home into a two-storey hotel. The Robinson family originally settled there 9 December 1875, and sold to Samuel Grandidge on 2 December 1896, approximately 3 years after Isaac's death. Edward Adamson eventually bought the property from Grandidge in 1898 for $3,500, but the removal of steamers from the lake proved to be the hotel's downfall. Adamson sold to William McCoomb in 1908. The photo depicts the long white two-storey building in the background with a view of the dock and path leading to the entrance of the building, with a number of people scattered across the lawn and in canoes along the shore., IHS127

Dog Powered Water Pump

Photo Mrs. H.J. Marquis and her dog pumping water. As the dog walks on the wheel, the wheel turns and powers a water pump, which eases the burden of labour for the farm's human inhabitants. This photo originally appeared on page 58 of the Stroud Tweedsmuir History, Vol. II.
