Members of the Big Sail Family

Photo of Paul, Jessie, and Charlotte Big Sail making woven baskets in the native tradition. In the photo, all three members are seated on the ground in front of a tent with the supplies for baskets in front of them. A small dog sits beside a finished basket. According to Mrs. F.W. Dallimore, the Big Sail family lived on the north half of lot 28, between concessions 11 and 12 and were known for their beautiful wares including baskets, small boats, handkerchief boxes, and hampers adorned with porcupine quills, grasses, and beadwork. Memorial To Private Henry Flay
-
157th Foresters, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), Innisfil Side, monument to Private Henry Flay. He was born in England in 1890 [monument lists dates as 1894] and he died on September 19, 1916 at Camp Borden of pneumonia [Source: Commonwealth War Graves Commission, note: listed as Harry Flay]. Buried at St. John's Cemetery, Cookstown.
Born and lived in New Milton, Hampshire, England with his parents William Henry and Annie Elizabeth and one of four siblings. He was working as a milkman at that time and approximately aged 16. There is no clear date of immigration to Canada. [Source: www.ancestry.uk ]
Flay enlisted with the CEF February 11, 1916 in Cookstown where he lived and worked as a farmer. Regimental number: 643476. He listed his date of birth as December 14th, 1890 and went by the name Harry, not Henry. [Source: Library and Archives Canada: Soldiers of the First World War ]
His name can found commemorated in The Books of Remembrance WW1, page 86.

Picture post card of the Men's and the Ladies' baseball teams in Lefroy. The Ladies and 40's Baseball teams were organized in the summer of 1913. Norman King (not pictured) acted as Coach and Manager. In the photo the men are standing in the back row dressed in white shirts and ties, and the ladies are seated on the grass in white blouses, neckerchiefs, and long skirts. Miners Family Home

Photograph of the home of Mr. and Mrs. William T. and Dinah Miners from 1908 to 1911, located at 12 Church Street. The lot was originally owned by the Ferguson family from 1869 (when it was valued at $11.39) until 1908 when the Miners purchased it for $300. In 1911 the Miners sold the home to William R. Chantler for $2,000. Pictured standing in front of the home from left to right are Marion Webb, Marion Lacke (both relatives from England), Dinah Miners (née Webb), and William T. Miners. The building itself is red brick with dark decorative shutters around each window and a small roofed porch wrapping around the front left corner of the house. The roof is a combination of Dutch and box gable, and a plank sidewalk is also visible along the front of the yard., IHS2712

Miss Bertha Sutherland

Photo of Miss Bertha Sutherland in full nursing uniform with cap, standing outdoors in front of a fence. She graduated in 1920 from Toronto Western Hospital. The uniform is all white, including white shoes.Miss Sutherland began her schooling in 1916 and although she should have graduated in three years, she developed a lung tumour in her third year, which delayed her graduation. During her recovery time she stayed with her aunt Tina Sutherland, who owned the home on 19 Elizabeth Street that was rented out as a hospital. She trained at this hospital with a Dr. Scott and chose to stay in Cookstown instead of going on to become a superintendent of Nurses in Barrie. She died on 20 February 1985 at age 92, and was the daughter of Donald Daniel Sutherland and Kate Coleman. She had two sisters and four brothers, and was a first cousin of Mae and Helen Sutherland.
