Photo of Miss Bertha Sutherland in full nursing uniform with cap, standing outdoors in front of a fence. She graduated in 1920 from Toronto Western Hospital. The uniform is all white, including white shoes.Miss Sutherland began her schooling in 1916 and although she should have graduated in three years, she developed a lung tumour in her third year, which delayed her graduation. During her recovery time she stayed with her aunt Tina Sutherland, who owned the home on 19 Elizabeth Street that was rented out as a hospital. She trained at this hospital with a Dr. Scott and chose to stay in Cookstown instead of going on to become a superintendent of Nurses in Barrie. She died on 20 February 1985 at age 92, and was the daughter of Donald Daniel Sutherland and Kate Coleman. She had two sisters and four brothers, and was a first cousin of Mae and Helen Sutherland.
