Group Photo taken of the employees of the Ice House in Belle Ewart sitting and standing along the loading platforms in front of the storage building. The men are all dressed in coats and hats, and chunks of ice are visible underneath the platform. Third and fourth from the left, in the back row, are George Moore and Elmo Quantz. The man in the back row wearing a white sweater is William Ruffet. Ice House Picture - George Baxter is in the centre of the picture third from the left, standing on a pile of straw.
The ice house gang, who provided most of southern Ontario's ice until the advent of electric refrigerators. This photo was taken in 1910. The ice house factory was probably a nice cool place to work in the hot summer months.

Photograph of the conveyors constructed to transport blocks of ice harvested from Lake Simcoe into a Belle Ewart Ice Company ice house on the shore. The conveyor structures and the building are all made of wood. Blocks of ice would be stored in the ice house year round and shipped as far as the United States to be used in home ice boxes., IHS300

Ice Industry Workers In Belle Ewart

Photograph of four men dressed long coats, boots, and hats who were employed in Belle Ewart as labourers for the ice industry. These men would cut large blocks of ice from the frozen Lake Simcoe and float them to the shore where conveyors would take them to an ice house for storage. The ice was later shipped to numerous locales and were used in home ice boxes before refrigerators were available. The men pictured standing in the back row are George Baxter and Bill Baxter, and seated in the front row are an unidentified man and Elmo Quantz, the father of Elma Ross., IHS3941

Construction: Hollow concrete block and brick. Started in 1962 by Innisfil Township School Area #1 and completed in 1963. Don Beatty, Chairman, James Rainey, Russell Stewart, George Lucas, and Frank Kell. 5 classrooms. This was the first central school.Closed Bethesda #2, Cherry Creek #3, Fifth Line #7 and Nantyr #8. Schools were sold by public auction - Fifth Line $4500., Cherry Creek $2250. and Nantyr for $3400.
