The studio has been set up with a chair, side table, and small box resting under Annie's feet. On the table there is an unknown decoration. Annie is sitting and holding a book in her lap. Apple Packing at Thompson Family Farm

John Thompson is using a heading vise to install the head on a barrel of apples with his three sons Wilson, Harry and Fred, plus unknown face in the doorway. This process is often mistaken as making cider with a press, due to the similarity of the upper workings of the mechanisms employed in both the pressing and packing operations. Photograph of troops in uniform amongst several white tents, taken in 1914. Between 1914 and 1918 the Cookstown Agricultural Fairgrounds were used as a training ground for soldiers before travelling to fight overseas in the First World War. This photo was taken near the Cookstown train station as the 76th Battalion stopped on route to the winter barracks, located at the Barrie Armoury. They had stopped to perform the drill as a way of showcasing their skills to the community after so many local residents had volunteered to join the Battalion., IHS1766

Arthur Jack

Image of Arthur Jack in uniform, taken in 1917. He was the son of John and Edith Jack (Née Dalby), and was the father of Locklan, Ian, Colin and Arthur Jr.Arthur was a soldier in the First World War - note the puttees (strips wrapped around his leg bandage). Regimental #250042, Private A.B. Jack, Canadian Expeditionary Force 4th army on 18 August 1918 accompanied by Pte. I.D. Ross on a routine patrol near Hammonwood, France came upon 43 German soldiers manning 5 machine guns. Jack and Ross captured this outpost, destroyed the machine guns and took the German soldiers prisoners.For this action Jack and Ross were both awarded the Military Medal (second highest award for gallantry in combat), on 11 October 1918. Pte. Ross was later killed in action., IHS846
