Celebrating Innisfil's Bicentennial!

By now you've heard that 2020 marks two hundred years since the Town of Innisfil was first surveyed. Unfortunately, the arrival of the Covid-19 Pandemic has changed some plans for how we all would have liked to celebrate this occasion, but it also has pushed us to find new and unexpected ways to celebrate our community.

In response, the Town has turned five utility boxes into commemorative landmarks featuring rich and vibrant historical photos celebrating our heritage! Each one displays photos that have been carefully selected to reflect a notable building, family, event, or geographic feature of the neighbourhood that the box can be found in.

These colourful displays are a fun and unexpected way to safely celebrate the occasion during the Covid-19 pandemic as all residents are encouraged to get outside and explore their neighbourhoods. Five more boxes will be wrapped in the spring of 2021.

Grab your family, bring the dog, and meet your friends at the following five locations (Click on each street location to link to pinned coordinates in Google Maps):

Alcona: Innisfil Beach Road across from the Lakeshore Branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library

Alcona: Anna Maria Avenue at Ashwood (St. Francis of Assisi crosswalk)

Cookstown: Queen Street across from the Post Office

Sandycove: Lockhart Road in the Sandycove Mall parking lot

Stroud: Victoria Street at the intersection with Yonge St.

Message from the Mayor:

"The Utility Box Wrap Project is about celebrating the people, places, and sense of community that make up the Town of Innisfil. It is a very creative and practical way of transforming the everyday, and often unnoticed, into something beautiful," says Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin. "It’s such a wonderful way to preserve our history and share some of the amazing photos we have available in our archives. We need to keep those stories alive and share them with the community."

This Utility Box Wrap Project was funded through the Community Anniversaries – Building Communities through Arts and Heritage grant received by the Town of Innisfil from the federal government.
