Cutting Ice At Strathallan
Photo of a man in a fedora and boots holding a handsaw and standing on a portion of ice. A horse drawn sled, loaded with several large blocks of ice can be seen in the background with another man seated upon the sled. The ice being cut here was located at the Strathallan woods, which then were 160 acres owned by Isidore Frederick "I.F." Hellmuth, a Toronto-based lawyer. The ice blocks here were stored in an icehouse on the premises and used throughout the summer in the summer home. Hellmuth was the first champion of the Canadian National Tennis Championship, later known as the Canadian Cup and the Rogers Open. He was also a three-time runner-up for the title, as well as a Doubles champion, and was an inaugural inductee into the Tennis Canada Hall of Fame in 1991., IHS1842

Cutting Ice On The Dallimore Ice Field

Dallimore Ice Building
Packing the blocks of ice - the Dallimore ice building was 100 by 100 feet, and about 16 feet high. The photo shows a block of ice approximately 3 by 5 feet being placed on the frame skids. The ice house had 10 inch walls full of sawdust and each layer was covered in sawdust. Using this method, ice could last as long as two years!!, IHS4313
Dalton Banting
Photo of Dalton Alvin Banting, who was born in Essa township in 1892. He married Pearl McCullough of SH Lot 19, Conc. 6, Innisfil on 14 July 1915. Together they farmed on NH Lot 1, Conc. 3 and had four children: Charles Benjamin Wray, Kathleen, Norma, and Marion. Dalton Banting served as reeve in Innisfil for two years; as deputy-reeve for two years, and as councillor for seven years. He died in 1979., IHS2115
