The ice being cut here was located at the Strathallan woods, which then were 160 acres owned by Isidore Frederick "I.F." Hellmuth, a Toronto-based lawyer. The ice blocks here were stored in an icehouse on the premises and used throughout the summer in the summer home. Hellmuth was the first champion of the Canadian National Tennis Championship, later known as the Canadian Cup and the Rogers Open. He was also a three-time runner-up for the title, as well as a Doubles champion, and was an inaugural inductee into the Tennis Canada Hall of Fame in 1991.
