Studio portrait of George Cowan, the brother of William Cowan Sr., who immigrated to Canada in the early 1850. He was a native of Dumfriesshire, Scotland and was born 5 March 1835 in Lockerbie, Scotland. He married Christina Ross (born 15 January 1831) in Cromarty, Scotland. They raised four boys and one daughter named John, Alex, Robert, William, and Mary. George Cowan cleared and farmed the north half of Lot 20 Concession 11 of Innisfil, and had lived there for a total of 60 years before his death in 1920. The portrait was taken later in his life and shows him in a dark coat with white hair and a white beard.
