Looking Back Over The Century In recalling a little about Bradford's centennial town hall, it may be of interest to recall some of those who have served officially in that building during the years. Bradford has had thirty reeves (one of whom completed his term as mayor), and the two mayors. Of these, three reeves' terms would predate the building, but Bradford's first reeve, Thomas Driffill returned to the office in 1867 and 68, and therefore in his second term in office served in the present building. Reeves of Bradford, and their dates of service, were Thomas Driffill, 1858-61, D.J. George 1862, John Swallow 1863, Anson Washburton 1864-65, G.D. Morton 1866, Thomas Driffill 1867-68, J.W.H. Wilson 1869-70, J.McL. Stevenson 1871-77, G.D. Morton 1878-79, T.S. Graham 1880-93, J.H. Boddy 1894-96, Wm. Campbell 1897-98, John Bemrose 1899, E. Garrett 1900-01, A.E. Scanlon 1902-03, Chas. Elliott 1904, Samuel Oldham 1905-06, Robert J. Thorpe 1906, Samuel Oldham 1907, A.E. Scanlon 1908-12, George W. Stoddart 1913, A.E. Scanlon 1914-17, J.E. Coombs 1918-27, Dennis Nolan 1928-34, J.E. Coombs 1935-42, Charles T.E. Evans 1943-49, Frank Allan 1950-51, Wm. F. Compton 1852, Frank Allan 1953, D. Arthur Evans 1954-57 when, with the municipality being given town status he became its first mayor, and, upon his becoming a member of Ontario Legislature, the present mayor, Mayor Joseph Magani took office, with Reeve Bruce Stewart serving in the capacity of reeve. Clerks have not been nearly so numerous as reeves, the longest term being served by Robt. Stewart 1861-1914. George G. Green from 1915 to 1937, and the present clerk, Miss. Margaret Davey, whose term of office began in 1946. Others included W.D. Bunn 1858, Samuel Driffill 1850, Thos. Lannon 1860, Victor Coombs 1938, D.E. Wade 1939-45. Today, in addition to the town hall's use for meetings of council it includes the offices for the town clerks, Bradford police, Bradford town superintendent, and other duties, the assessor's office and also that of the magistrate.
